Coal spot prices remain unchanged for third week

A short ton of Central Appalachia coal remained the same for the third consecutive week on the spot market, according to the Energy Information Agency.
A short ton of Central Appalachia coal traded for $41.10 last week, according to EIA data. A month ago, a short ton of Central Appalachia was selling for $40.50 on the spot market.
Northern Appalachia coal continued to lead the market, selling for $43.35 a short ton. Its price has held firm for three weeks, after trading for $42.10.
Illinois Basin coal has been selling for $8.70 a short ton for three weeks, down from $8.80 in prior weeks.
For the third week, Powder River Basin coal was selling for $8.70 a short ton, down a dime from three weeks ago.
The biggest increase was experienced by the Uinta Basin. It ended last week selling from $39.40 a short ton for the third straight week. Prior to that it was selling for $37.50 a short ton, up $1.90.
Overall, estimated U.S. coal production totaled approximately 12.9 million short tons last week, 8.4 percent lower than the week before.
The EIA estimates that is 22.9 percent lower than the production estimate in the comparable week in 2015.
Geographically, east of the Mississippi River coal production totaled 4.7 million short tons last week, while west of the Mississippi River coal production totaled 8.2 short tons.
The EIA estimated U.S. year-to-date coal production totaled 343.7 million short tons, 27 percent lower than the comparable year-to-date coal production in 2015.
